Azkals, the country’s leading football team made history after
booking its maiden trip to the Asian Football Cup qualifier after outclassing
Tajikistan, 2-1, Tuesday evening at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Football is certainly not the most popular sports in the
Philippines. It’s not even next to basketball which is regarded like
a religion in the country.
Phil
Youngbusband and Kevin Ingreso scored the two goals for Azkals that will
send the team to the 2019 AFC Asian Cup next January in U.A.E.
Younghusband
has been with the team for the past 13 years and he has seen how Azkals
struggled to keep up it its feet to survive. The winning goal was
his 50th international goal.
Younghusband
says "Obviously a goal of mine is to get to 50, but the most important
thing is the team wins."
The
other hero who became part of the history was Kevin ingreso .
"I
actually couldn't believe it," said Ingreso, who was named man of the
match. "It's not often I score a goal with my head."
"I was crying. The
tears came out," he acknowledged.
